Menopause at work

Menopause is not a niche issue. It is a significant workforce concern affecting millions of employees across every sector. The organisations that take it seriously are the ones that attract and keep their best people, and the ones that don't risk losing them quietly and unnecessarily.

WHY IT MATTERS
The Impact on Your Organisation
Menopause symptoms can significantly affect performance, confidence and attendance. Without the right support, the consequences extend far beyond the individual.
Talent Retention
Women aged 45 to 55 are one of the fastest-growing demographics in the UK workforce. Without menopause support, organisations risk losing experienced, skilled people at the peak of their careers.
Sickness Absence
Symptoms including fatigue, anxiety, brain fog and sleep disruption can lead to increased sick days and reduced output, many of which go unaddressed because menopause is rarely the recorded reason.
Legal Responsibility
Under the Equality Act 2010, menopause symptoms can meet the threshold for disability. Employers have a duty to consider reasonable adjustments, and those that fail to do so face growing legal risk.
Workplace Culture
An organisation that openly supports menopause sends a powerful message about its values. It builds psychological safety, loyalty and trust across the entire workforce, not just those directly affected.
CULTURE & INCLUSION
What a Menopause-Supportive Workplace Looks Like
Creating a supportive environment does not require a large budget or a dedicated HR department. It begins with awareness and a willingness to have open, respectful conversations.
- Employees feel comfortable disclosing menopause-related needs without fear of judgement
- Managers are equipped to have sensitive, supportive conversations
- Flexible working arrangements are considered and offered where possible
- Simple workplace adjustments are explored proactively, not reactively
- Menopause is normalised as a health and wellbeing topic, not a taboo
- Men in the workplace understand menopause and how to support their colleagues
- There is a clear policy or commitment that employees can see and trust
"When employees feel safe to speak about their needs early, organisations can put support in place before absence, disengagement or resignation become the outcome."

Your Legal Responsibilities
The Equality Act 2010 protects employees whose menopause symptoms are severe enough to have a long-term, substantial impact on their ability to carry out day-to-day activities. This may constitute a disability, placing a legal duty on employers to make reasonable adjustments.
Additionally, failure to support menopausal employees could constitute discrimination on the grounds of sex, age or disability. Forward-thinking organisations are acting now, not waiting to be challenged.
