AN HONEST INSIGHT
What Is a Menopause Coach and Do You Need One?
Melanie Clarkson · April 2026 · 5 min read
You have probably heard the word coaching thrown around a lot recently. Life coaches, health coaches, business coaches. But a menopause coach is something quite specific, and if you are wondering whether it might be right for you, this post should help you understand exactly what it involves and what it does not.
Let me start with what menopause coaching is not.
It is not therapy or counselling, although it can feel deeply supportive. It is not a medical consultation, although it works very well alongside medical care. It is not someone telling you what to do or handing you a one-size-fits-all plan. And it is absolutely not someone who will sit and nod sympathetically while you talk in circles.
Menopause coaching is something more practical than that, and more personal.
| So what is it?
At its core, coaching is a structured, forward-focused conversation. It starts with where you are right now, takes into account where you want to be, and helps you find a clear, practical path between the two.
A menopause coach brings specific knowledge of what perimenopause and menopause involve, physically, emotionally and practically, and uses that understanding to help you make sense of your own experience. Not in a general, textbook way, but in a way that is specific to you, your symptoms, your life, your relationships and your goals.
Every woman's menopause journey is different. What works for one person may be completely wrong for another. A good menopause coach understands that and never imposes a template.
| What does a session actually look like?
Sessions are typically one to one conversations, held online or in person, usually lasting around an hour. They are confidential, relaxed and entirely focused on you.
You might spend time exploring what is currently feeling most difficult, whether that is a particular symptom, a change in your relationships, a loss of confidence, or simply the sense of not feeling like yourself anymore. You might work on practical strategies for managing symptoms in your day to day life. You might look at exercise, nutrition, sleep, stress or any number of factors that influence how you feel during menopause.
Over time, sessions build on each other. You start to develop a clearer picture of what you need and a stronger sense of your own agency in navigating this transition.
| How is coaching different from seeing my GP?
Your GP plays a vital role, and coaching is not a replacement for medical care. What coaching offers is the time, space and focus that a ten minute appointment simply cannot provide.
A doctor can diagnose, prescribe and monitor. A coach sits with you in the detail of your lived experience and helps you build a life that works around and through it. The two work very well together.
| Do I need to be struggling to benefit from coaching?
Not at all. Some women come to coaching in real crisis, feeling completely lost and unable to function as they normally would. Others come because they want to be proactive, to understand what is coming and prepare for it well. Both are equally valid.
You do not have to have hit rock bottom to deserve support.
| Is menopause coaching just for women?
No. I also work with men who want to understand what their partner, colleague or family member is going through, and with organisations that want to support their employees better. Menopause affects everyone around it, and coaching can help all of those people too.
| How do I know if it is right for me?
If any of the following sounds familiar, coaching might be exactly what you need:
- You feel like you have lost yourself and do not know how to get back
- You are managing your symptoms but not really thriving
- You feel isolated because nobody around you seems to understand
- You want practical strategies but do not know where to start
- You are navigating menopause alongside work, relationships or caring responsibilities and struggling to balance it all
- You simply want a safe, confidential space where you can talk openly without feeling like a burden
You do not need to have a specific problem to solve. Sometimes just having someone in your corner who truly understands makes more difference than anything else.
